A DAY IN THE HILLS. A Poetical Competition of the Edwin Markham chapter of the English Poetry Society held at Villa Montalvo, September 18, 1926.
$ 22.50
The 2nd Annual Edwin Markham Poetry competition was held at James Phelan's' mansion, Villa Montalvo, with the winner being Sibyl Croly Hanchett. In addition to the seven other prize winners were anthology contributions by Ina Coolbrith, Edwin Markham Edward De Witt Taylor, and if you're a Clark Ashton Smith enthusiast you'll recognize the names of George Sterling, Charles Warren Stoddard, James Phelan, David Starr Jordan, and CAS's poem, AUTUMN ORCHARDS. Something of a "Who's Who" of California poets of the early 20th century. George Sterling died earlier in the year, and there are many salutes to the noted California poet, and photographs. Softbound in leatherette type papers, and printed by Taylor & Taylor one of the premier fine printers of San Francisco. Printed upon slick paper. Slightly taller than chapbook size. Some fading to the covers and spine. Just a shame the group pictures weren't bigger. Title: A DAY IN THE HILLS.
